- לָעַט(b. h.; cmp. לָעַס) to swallow, glut. Deut. R. s. 1, beg. (ref. to לת̇ר̇ופ̇ה̇, Ez. 47:12, cmp. Men.98a להת̇יר̇ פ̇ה̇ אלמים) כל מי שהוא אלם ולוֹעֵט הימנהוכ׳ whoever is tongue-tied and eats greedily of it (the Law), will have his tongue loosened Hif. הִלְעִיט to feed an animal by putting food into its mouth, contrad. to אָבַס. Sabb.XXIV, 3 אבל מַלְעִיטִין but you may put food into the camels mouth; Gen. R. s. 63 (with ref. to הלעיטני, Gen. 25:30); Num. R. s. 21. Tosef.B. Kam. VI, 17, ib. Ḥull.III (IV), 19 הִלְעִיטָהּ חלתיתוכ׳ if he made the animal eat asafoetida ; a. e.B. Kam.69a הַלְעִיטֵהוּ לרשעוכ׳ let the wicked (robber) glut it and die.
